Speech Therapy For The Elderly

The elderly population can acquire various types of Speech and Language Disorders. The disorders of the elderly can be of many types and can have numerous causes. This population requires utmost care and attention to help treat and/or manage their speech and language difficulties.

Neurogenic Communication Disorders

Acquired neurogenic communication disorders are caused by damage to the central or peripheral nervous system. People with these disorders at one time had normal communication abilities.

The difficulties may come suddenly after an acute event or appear gradually as part of a progressive disorder. Some of the causes include stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, tumour, and traumatic brain injury.

Speech and communication abilities are sensitive indicators of neurological problems and one of first places where neurologic problems are noticeable.

Common Neurogenic communication disorders are:

Aphasia - Aphasia results from damage to the parts of the brain that process language. Aphasia causes problems with any or allof the following: speaking, understanding, reading, and writing.

Dysarthria – Dysarthria is caused by damage to nerves or to parts of the brain that control speech movements. Movements of the mouth, face, throat, and chest may be weak, slow, or uncoordinated and lead to speech that is difficult to understand.

Neurogenic Stuttering – Neurogenic stuttering is a disorder of neurologic origin in the rhythm of speech during which the patient knows exactly what he wants to say but is unable to because of an involuntary prolongation, cessation, or repetition of a sound.

Demantia – Dementia causes memory loss and other thinking problems that make it hard for the person to remember important information, solve problems, or plan their day. Everyday tasks like getting dressed, taking medicine, and paying bills may be affected. Most types of dementia get worse over time and do not have a cure. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia.

Parkinson's - Parkinson's disease is a brain disorder that leads to shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with walking, balance, and coordination. Older woman and her caregiver. Parkinson's symptoms usually begin gradually and get worse over time. As the disease progresses, people may have difficulty walking and talking. They may also have mental and behavioural changes, sleep problems, depression, memory difficulties, and fatigue.

Management

The management of Neurogenic Communication Disorders usually requires a team approach of various professionals including a Speech and Language Pathologist. Wherein, the goals of Speech Therapy highly depend on the type and severity of the disorder. Sometimes the goals may be to slow down the progression of the degenerative disorder and sometimes to rehabilitate the individual to best recover to their pre-morbid communication capabilities. In Neurogenic Communication Disorders, time is essential as the spontaneous recovery period of the individual is within one to two years wherein the rate of recovery is fastest.
